Blog Post 8 - 4/1

This week, I finished modeling my building for Athena and began texturing. So far, I have had more problems with this building compared to the other 3 I have done. Most of my problems with this building were with my UV maps and the high poly brick design I had made for this building. I still like how it turned out and how much it resembles the original Temple of Athena.

I used the same columns I used for my Demeter building to save myself some time. The ones on the right, I resized to fit the building and updated the UV maps afterwards. Demeter's building will have vines wrapping around her columns therefore, these being the same won't be noticeable.

For the 'little building' on the right of the temple, I was able to find a statue column that was scanned from the original temple of Athena. I put the model into ZBrush and ZRemeshed it to create a low poly version. I then UV unwrapped it to have a UV map for it. I subdivided it and projected the original high poly model onto my new low poly model four times to get a high poly model with the same UVs. They fit perfectly into my temple, and I think they are a great addition.

I got this model from Sketchfab by 3Dystopia.

I was also able to find relief sculpture models for the top of the building. I could not find the exact models used for the temple of Athena but I figured since the camera will be so far away, it won't be that big of an issue. I don't quite like how the reliefs are placed and am waiting to see how it will look after baking my high poly brick onto the temple. I might go back and change these to be flatter or bake them onto the temple instead of placing them on top.

I got the from Sketchfab "Votive relief with Athena" and the "Votive relief with godesses and gods" by Bonn Center for Digital Humanities.

Putting my model into Painter and baking on the high poly is where my problems really began. Using a fabric texture on my low poly temple model allowed me to see that those UV maps were fine. It seems that my UV maps for the high poly temple got changed somewhere along the process of making the bricks. This has caused me to redo the high poly entirely. This isn't too big of a loss since there were some things I wanted to change anyways. For example, the relief sculptures can now be baked on instead.

After some time, I was able to fix a lot of the issues but still need to go back. My main issue right now is the front pole not being able to UV. Maya is giving me the error that I has non-manifold geometry but my geometry has no issues visible. Hopefully I can get it fix this week and start my textures for my other buildings.
