 Throne for Zues

This week, I created a throne for Zues and 3D scanned Greek statues using white light scanning and prepared them for Unreal. I started with the same base I used for the Poseidon throne but made some minor changes to it. I added a pedestal to the bottom of the throne because Zues's throne is in the middle and he's viewed as 'the king' of the Olympic gods

I then brought the throne into ZBrush to sculpt some high poly details onto it. I only sculpted on specific parts I knew I wanted to maintain a low poly count. The rest of the details I planned to texture in Painter. I used Alpha stamps for the Greek patterns, reliefs, and the sun design on the sides. The top I drew on myself. I added one of the 3D scans I did (Winged Victory) and some lion and eagle models I found online. I went with the theme of 'The God of the Sky" and implemented a few sun deisgns. The eagle is Zues' symbolic animal and the lions are to represent him being 'the king' of the gods.

I exported an obj file of the high poly and decimated a duplicate of the model to a poly count of 100k to prepare it for Unreal. I brought the decimated model back into my Maya project and put the UVs from the decimated model onto the same texture set of the models that were not brought into ZBrush. I mesh combined it and re-positioned the pivot point, the model was finished.

Once finished, I brought the low poly model into Painter and baked the high poly model onto it. I used a basic marble texture and turned up the tiling. I added the damaged gold smart material and masked the parts I wanted gold. For the Greek patterns, I painted the mask onto them by hand. I added some alpha stamps of lightning on the bottom. Though. it ended up looking like cracks in the marble, I kept it. I couldn't find a sun design for the side so I drew one myself, I did not spend too much time on this since the side of the chair won't really be seen in our final scene.

Greek Statues

Also this week, I 3D scanned some Greek Statues that on of our CAGD professors, Connor had. I used the Creality CR-Scan Otter which is a handheld white light 3D scanner. I scanned 5 statues with this scanner and used the software for it on my laptop. It only took me about 2 hours. They made great assets for our scene and I used one of the models in my Zues Throne.

After I got obj files of all the statues, I imported each one individually into ZBrush. I cleaned up any errors the scan had and smoothed most of the model over to get rid of the bumpy textures most 3D scans have. I then ZRemeshed them to a lower poly count, UV unwrapped them for texturing, and projected the high poly onto the low to create a low poly model and a high for texturing. I brought them into painter and baked the high poly onto the low and put a marble texture and ambient occlusion onto all of them. I brought them into Maya to position them correctly in the center of the world and moved the pivot point to the bottom. I exported the fbx files out of Maya and those are the models we will use in our Unreal scene.

3D scan from the Creality software on the left and finished, low poly model on the right.

The Athena statue had a hammer that was detached from the statue and too small to scan. I took reference photos of it and modeled it inside of Maya. I textured it separately from the statue and then positioned it in Maya onto the statue. I meshed combined the two and created a final fbx file for this statue.
